RT Infrastructure Solutions (RTIS) is proud to announce its critical involvement in the transformative Salford Crescent station upgrade project, part of the Manchester and Northwest Transformation Programme (MNTP). This ambitious initiative, spearheaded by Network Rail, will deliver a new third platform designed to improve passenger flow and reduce train delays across the busy central Manchester rail network.
The £21 million project addresses capacity and performance challenges in one of Greater Manchester’s most heavily trafficked stations, which handled nearly 1.2 million entries and exits in 2022/23. The additional platform will provide signallers with greater flexibility, alleviating bottlenecks and improving connectivity for services traveling across the Northwest, including to Manchester Airport.
As part of the upgrade, RTIS will deliver a comprehensive package of signalling works to support the platform’s construction and integration. These activities include:
Signalling Surveys
Provision of Signalling Engineering Manager
Attendance at possession & Planning Meetings
Production of Master Test Plan and Test & Commissioning Plans
Provision of Signalling Equipment and Materials
Cable running of all multi core cables.
Installation of signals, DC track circuits, TPWS, AWS and RCM Condition Monitoring Equipment
SMTH Support for additional works
Signalling Prep & Testing
Signalling Test & Commissioning – Delivered in two phases.
TIC Management
Production of all test certificates and documentation
Entry into service
The project will also require significant collaboration with Salford City Council to manage road closures, including a year-long closure of University Road West under the railway bridge. A diversionary route is in place to minimise disruption to motorists, with continuous access to local properties maintained.
